If it’s All-Star Season, it must be raining….
Many of you know that I am a Little League Baseball ADA for District2 Florida and June & July are not exactly vacation months for me. Regular readers will remember that just a month or so ago, we were having terrible droughts and wildfires.
But, we all knew that as soon as we started the All-Star games here in South Brevard, Mother Nature would rescue us from the dry season. She has not failed to the tune of about 9 inches of rain in the past 72 hours.
The Little League Baseball Tournament culminates in Williamsport, PA in late August through a chain of tournaments held in thousands of cities across the globe. The first tournament is District, then Section, then State, then Regional, with the 8 US region winners going into a Pool and the 8 International winners going into another Pool. After Pool Play, the US winner plays the International winner on ABC.
Even many of the regional games are televised on ESPN and ESPN2.
The point of this is that there are timetables. The winners of the Districts must meet in the Sectionals, and the Sectional Winners in the State, and so on. So, with all the rain, things get backed up. Games get doubled up, sometimes double headers are required, etc.
It keeps the District Staff hopping to rearrange schedules, notify coaches, update websites, etc. By the way, the unsung heroes in all this mess are the grounds crews. They work 12-14 hour days preparing, and in some cases repairing, the fields so that they kids have a safe and attractive playing surface.
Here in District 2 Florida (website: www.d2fl.com) our field maintenance is done by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department. Kudos to Jessie and all the great men and women who work so that kids can play.
